No recognition of DV Device except in Windows

What could cause ALL my video programs (Vegas 4c, Edition 5.1, Scenalyzer Live, Premiere 6.5, Pinnacles DV detection tool) to stop recoginizing my Canon GL1 for capture while windows DOES acknowledge it everytime I turn it on or off or connect or disconnect it? Also, the device manager does list the camcorder under Imaging Devices. It is 'working properly'. I have tried 5 different 1394 jacks (1 on soundcard, 2 on Pinnacles DV500 Board, and 2 on Matrox 1394 Card) with two different cables. The camcorder itself does show the 'DV IN' message on it's LCD screen as it always has. I can use Vegas 4c to transfer the preview to TV via the camcorder. I have a Matrox External FW HD that is read properly. Of course the camcorder is set to VTR. I am stumped especially in light of the fact I have captured video many times previously! Since the last capture session I have done a clean install of Windows XP Pro, but as stated above it is always recognized and the device manager is happy.

I have had some weird stuff happen when connecting my XL1s while connected to a firewire HD or A/D converter ( ie Windows listing my HD as my A/D converter when the converter wasn't even turned on)
I have one suggestion to try if you have anything else hooked up via firewire: disconnect them and (in V4 capture) select options/ "reconnect to current device". May be a long shot but it's worked for me before.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I just tried that because of the following new information I can now thow into the pool: (made no difference).

New info: I just started getting window messages to the effect could not save file to P:\$mft. P: is my external hard drive that was hooked via Firewire. Windows explorer could not access the drive saying 'P: not currently available now'. Disk keeper could not access it either. I then hooked up the drive via USB2 instead of FW and all seems to be well with the external hard drive again.

This must be a clue but I can't understand it. Like I said before, I used three different FW cards (Audigy Audio card, Pinnacles DV500, Matrox vanilla 1394 card) and windows still sees the camcorder. Could all three cards be going bad at once? Don't think so. What in windows controls firewire and could cause problems even though windows recognizes the camcorder?

Thanks for trying. It IS appreciated.

I have more info now: I restored my computer to several days before I installed Edition 5. (Too many video programs installed?) When I did and checked hardware devices I saw missing drivers for 61883 Class Bus Device. Specific location: Texas Instrument OHCI Compliant IEEE 1(the rest was off the screen). I figured that was it so I tried to update the drivers. No update found. Put in my XP Pro CD and had it check there. No update found. Reinstalled XP Pro with repair. The drivers were installed because there were no yellow exclamation marks anywhere. I turned on my Canon GL1 for the first time after the repair install and windows found it even stating it installed drivers for the Canon Camcorder. Really thought I had it there, but once again none of my programs: now SC Live, Vegas 4c, Premiere 6.5, or Pinnacles DV Expert can find it. I did reinstall SC Live. GADS! This is frustrating.
I am open to all ideas.

did u try restoring it before the successful recognition day....if you still remember the date.....looks like some file on..../system32 might be corrupted.

do you remember what programs u installed after that last recognition....could be one of these is corrupting one of the system files.

For diagnostic purposes, uninstall all Pinnacle hardware, software, drivers. reboot. Does vegas now see the DV device?
