With .mpg there are certain settings where the audio is actually not rendered to the resulting .mpg file, you have to render it separately.

However I think the .wmv spec contains both video & audio in the file, which leads me to believe that maybe it's not your output settings, but something else. Nevertheless, check the dialog just prior to kicking off the rendering, to see if possibly you're using settings that assume audio will be separate from video.

The MPEG 2 templates for "DVD Architect" do not include sound by default. Most other MPEG 2 and all MPEG 1 templates should include the sound.

In either case, you can go into custom settings and enable or disable the audio manually as you wish.

Kelly I have VMS 4.0 and I have a problem. I have rendered to mpg before and not had this problem. When I render to mpg I get a mpg file for video and wav file for audio. The wav file will play but there is no sound. I try to play it using the windows media player and the player in DVD ARCH but neither one plays the sound. I am able to render to avi and the audio is fine. This problem happen last night right after I down loaded an update to Real Player. Do you think that this has any thing to do with my problem? I went back and played a wav file that I generated 4 days ago and it played fine.

If I may be so bold as to chime in on this one - It is not uncommon for any of the media players to "want to be the main one" especially following updates. You will see a question sometimes saying this or that is currently associated with something else would you like to change it. Sometimes they change the file association without asking. You can fire up realplayer and click tools>preferences>content>media types and see if Realplayer made itself the defauls player for everything. If it did you can click MANUAL>select>and go through the list. I have mine set to handle only realplayer files (imagine that) - but you can add or subtract to suit yourself. Check there to see if wav is assigned to that program or another - if it is you may want to try clearing the check mark for wav files. Hopefully this will take care of your issue.

Thanks Rustier. I did a restore on my computer to the day before I updated Real Player and I did a render to MPG and Wav and the file played fine. However the file generated after the Real player update would still not play. I did as you suggested and checked my settings and Real player is not set as the default. Thanks for your help again and I will continue to look at this problem.

Same exact problem here. VMS 4.0, audio file showed up after render and would play, but no sound came out. i-Tunes was the culprit on my pc....uninstalled i-Tunes, reinstalled VMS4.0 and everything works fine now.
