Options->Preferences->Audio Device

Also make sure you don't have a track on the timeline soloed or muted.

Please fill out your system specifications in your user profile.

What audio hardware are you using?

Are you using the mapper, surround mapper, classic wave, or ASIO for you device?

Thank you both for replying. I have checked that none of the tracks is muted. Sorry, I'm a novice user and am not sure what is meant by audio hardware. The audio device shown in the Options window is Microsoft Sound Mapper, which is the default. The only two other options are Direct Surround Sound Mapper and Windows Classic Wave Device and I have tried them both without success.

Unfortunately, we can't recommend which settings to use without knowing your computer specs. What audio card does your computer have?

Also, what kind of camcorder did this video come from and what format is it in?

Have you tried adding a .WAV file to your project to see if it plays?

Sorry - how do I find out what audio card I have? I have looked in the Control Panel under Sounds which says I have a digital output device - SPDIF. Is this of any help?

Device Manager, Bambino.
If you don't know how to access this in your particular version of Windows, you can find the directions on the internet.

I thought you might like to know that my problem is now solved. In despair I worked my way through every menu and in Options I found one called Mute all Audio. This appeared NOT to be selected but I clicked on it anyway and it did the trick. I don't understand this since the mute button on the audio track always showed it was unmuted or why there is nothing in the Options menu to indicate whether or not the Audio track is muted - it doesn't make for ease of use! Anyway, I'm very grateful to everyone who made suggestions to help me out.
