No Sound/Audio coming thr ...Pls can anyone help

I have a short piece of footage, which I edited down to 14 minutes. During the editing I started to run into sound problems, for example I would have sound/audio at certain parts of the footage and then it would get crackly and sound would go. However, if I clicked further up in the timeline there would be some sound but this would only last for a little while and then go. Ive tried rendering the file out as .wmv and .pca files but again the sound does not come through. I think I must have I "pressed something" unknowingly during the editing. Although I use Vegas quite a lot for work I have had no proper training, so I spend a lot of time guessing. I am really stuck on this if any body has suggestions I would really be grateful, if possible in not too technical termonology. Im using Sony Vegas Pro 8 and I recently when on line and updated, and I seem to have had more problems after I did this, and wonder if this might be part of the problem, would I need to go back and reload the software from scratch.... I am really loosing my hair fast with it.

You gave absolutely no details about the file you are trying to work with.
Once you have done that, you have a much better chance of finding help towards a solution.
Use the Media Properties box in Vegas, or the freeware MediaInfo, and post the details of your file here.

I don't have an answer, just some things to consider:
1) is your source media OK? Can you play the source file in another application? Is the audio OK?
2) what are your preview settings in vegas? If you turn off the video preview or turn down the preview resolution does the issue change too? (hopefully getting better)
3) what is your audio hardware? driver? buffer settings? any other peripherals attached?
4) wmv may not include audio by default - check the template. Try rendering as a wav file & play that wav file in another application.

Knowing your source file format and project settings would help shine more light on your issue.

Does the source file sound ok using another app for playback?
Does this happen randomly or at the same place(s)?
- During the same event?
- Same in track solo mode?

Things to check. "Volume envelopes" (display shortcut: "V"), "Event volume" (thin white vertical line in audio event waveform.. normally at top.. click-drag to change)
