No sound on MPG from new Sony HDD Cam - Vegas 5.0d

We are still using Vegas 5.0d, as up till now, there has been no compelling reason to upgrade. The plan was to update when Version8 came out.

My problem is I have just bought a new Hard Disk Drive Handycam, Model DCR-SR52e. This produces MPG files, which Vegas 5.0d recognizes but only as Video, no Audio. If I play the clip in other software, I hear the Audio.

I guess you're going to suggest I update a driver or something, but I'm not sure what to update, where to find it and how to do it.

Of course we could move up to Version 7 I suppose, but I was looking for a cheaper option, as I wanted to wait for Version 8.

This is what I get when I open the Properties view on a clip...

I think the problem is that the camera records the audio as ac3 and V5 doesn't have a ac3 decoder built in.
You might be able to get it to work if you have a DVD playing app installed on the PC, or else upgrade to V7.

Well, I have a workaround. I can use the software that came with the camera to burn the footage to a DVD, and then rip that back onto the PC as MPEG-1. However, I think I must be losing some quality in the process.

My choices seem to be $234.95 to upgrade Vegas, or else $89.95 for Vegas Movie Studio + DVD. This might seem like a backward step from Vegas, but actually, it's my son who uses Vegas 5 right now to make his movies. All I want to do is make home videos.

I would still like to find out if I can get the audio in separately, as the Video is fine. I'm going to keep trying.

You might be able to rip the audio using BeSweet which will also convert from ac3 to .wav. BeSweet is free.
Doing this would avoid encoding the vision, just drop the .wav file onto the same T/L as the vision straight from the camera.
