The VOB file may contain an .AC3 audio track and Vegas won't play .AC3, PowerDVD will.

This seems very strange that Vegas can create an AC3 audio track yet can't play one. Is there some way to use a plugin etc to get it to play in Vegas?

Nope!
Vegas will not play ac3 for a good reason, it's an lossy output only format.

Well.... you could use "SmartRipper v2.41" or maybe "Xmuxer v2.03" to demux the file into its MPEG2 and AC3 components, then use "AzidLame" to convert the .AC3 file to a .WAV file which can then be placed on the Vegas timeline. These tools are freely available on the Internet.

I think they don't want the AC3 file to load on the sound timeline because of some copyright agreements, at least that's my take on it. I do think it would be a good idea to at least let the AC3 file be "played" in Vegas. If it can be rendered with Vegas, the file should at least have some working relationship with Vegas, even if it's somewhat limited.
