NoiseTrade: Free Music

Derek Webb (former member of Caedmon's Call and now solo artist) has put out a website that allows artist to give away their music in exchange for information or if you are not comfortable with that, you can pay whatever you want for the music. It just came online yesterday. The main goal is to get their music out there and to do so without record labels. I find this to be a pretty smart move on behalf of the artists.

Seeing how they want their music out there, that may benefit us. A simple email and explanation of why we want to use one of their songs may be all it takes (if you like the music- the makers of Grey's Anatomy did and they used one of Derek Webb's song on the show).

So, here is the link. Check it out.

I assume Derek retained sync licensing rights and it wasn't completely "free" for broadcast use. Their site's license agreement isn't specific about the music - just the website, but I assume based on that alone, the give-aways are for personal use, not commercial. If they are completely free for any commercial use, they are shooting themselves in the foot - not every artist has a full tour schedule that give away music will support as an advertising loss-leader. Once you give it away, it's hard to go back and start charging for it when the market goes to download/streaming delivery only. Just a passing opinion fwiw...

Don't hear me wrong, sync licenses are not free and not what this site is giving away.

My point was that if they are truly wanting to get the music out there, they would presumably be more willing to allow a sync license for things such as small productions, corporate or weddings, etc. That was my point. Plus, if you like any of the music, it is your for the taking (for personal usage of course).
