These are the N97 device video playback specs:

Video Playback Formats: 3GPP formats (H.263), Flash Video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4, RealVideo 7,8,9/10, WMV 9
Video Playback Frame Rate: 30 fps

This isn't exactly what you were asking but I hope it helps. Also, the Nokia 5800 also has the same specs so your rendered video should play well on that too. Let me know if you want me to try out a rendered clip.

Hi Craig,

Did you have success with rendering to the N97/5800? I'm trying several options, but the information Nokia has provided is inadequate and I can't get a video that plays on the device. I'm Googling and there are a few web pages out there that reccommend other software to do it, but I'd like to be able to render video out from Vegas.

Clarification - I'm having trouble only with MPEG-4 rendering. I've been able to render to WMV and play it back on the 5800.

Thanks!

Not yet! I have been using TMPG and chose MP4 ISO mode and it plays great with audio as well.

I did try to make a Vegas proj with the same size but that never worked either. But if you get it to work within Vegas let us know.

Very timely discussion. I will be making download(s) for portable devices within the next couple of months.

Is there a generally-accepted format that takes care of 80% of recent devices?

Or should I offer 4-5 formats to download and hope the user picks the right one? I think this option will be a nightmare.

If someone has a good online resource to help guide me, I would be very appreciative!

@LightAds

Good news is, yes, there's at least one configuration that works with the Nokia 5800, and that is "Sony AVC / Memory Stick QVGA baseline - 896Kbps"

I've wasted the last hour trying to modify that configuration to see if I can somehow get an nHD (640x360) output that will playback on the 5800's RealPlayer but so far, no luck. Seems like QVGA is the only resolution that will play successfully.

Not knowing TMPG well, what does "ISO" stand for? What are the output settings that you are using, resolution, bitrate, etc.?

@fldave:

If you're going for 80% coverage, it would seem to me that your best bet would be to target the iPod and you'll be set. These mobile phones are too picky. Or rather, their video players are finicky, and the manufacturers don't publish adequate information to generate compatible video easily.

Another useful tool is GSPOT. You can interegate any movie file and tell you what bit rate etc. When you see a good clip that looks good and plays well, run it thru GSPOT and try replicate thos setting in Vegas. It doesn't aways work though. I can get the smaller one's to play but the phone manual say's 640x360 which I can't get to play.

Yea Dave, If you could come up with some templates it would be a real time saver.

LightAds,

It seems like your experience is the same as mine, i.e. the nHD (640x360) files Vegas is generating aren't compatible with the phones we're targeting. There is a difference in the files as indicated by G-Spot:

Vegas generated using either MainConcept AVC/AAC or Sony AVC .mp4:
codec: avc1
name: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC

files from other sources:
codec: mp4v
Name: MPEG-4 Video

Is it possible to coax Vegas Pro 8 into generating files that comply with the second format? I'll run a forum search and also open a support case if I don't fnid anything.
