Noobish Questions

Coldkilla wrote on 11/28/2004, 11:04 AM
Hi, I just got Vegas 5.0a. I'm only 16 years old, and have a strong drive to make some pretty cool movies, for home and/or school. I have never worked in the field of movie editing, and since I got Vegas I am lost.. I played around with it for a while, finally figured out how to split a clip down, and played with some of the opacity for the video feed, thats about it. I have a few questions to ask:

1. Where are a few good places for a beginner like me to go to learn more on Vegas, tutorials in worded or video format works with me, as long as a person like me can understand them.

2. I want to do a quick preview of a scene in my movie, without looking into the jaggy preview box, to see if my video comes out smooth.

3. Where can I go to find what Transitions/effects are in a clip & how do I delete them?

4. Where can I learn more about 'Encoding' or playing with the quality of my video (Remember, I don't understand what any of it means). Eventually, when my movie(s) are done, I can make a good quality online-downloadable version, and a HD version to put on a DVD and keep for myself and/or school.

Thanks alot, appreciate all the help I can get.

Here's an excellent place to start, you should find tutorials and articles to cover just about all of your questions.
http://www.vasst.com/login.htm
You will need to sign up, but it's free and safe.

You can also find lots of answers to beginners' questions by searching these forums and the knowledge base, and of course, the Vegas pdf Manual.

Welcome aboard and don't hesitate to post back if you get stuck.

Here's a list of tutorials for Vegas. The Tips and Tricks newsletter is a good place to start. Look at the back issues for "Beginner's corner.

You can also buy DVD tutorials for Vegas. And Spot who posts here has Vegas 5 book called Vegas 5 Editing Workshop. It's on Amazon and elsewhere.

If you don't know how to remove effects or transitions, how did you add them? To remove them you need go to the same place that you put tranistions and effects in.

To put effects on a clip, click the Event FX button on the clip. It's a little rectangle-looking button on the bottom right of every clip. When you click this the Video Event FX window opens. Here can you add multiple effects.
FX
1 Choose Sony Glow and click add and then choose Sony Deform and click add.
2 Then click OK. You see that windows pops up with a tab for the Glow controls and a tab for the Deform controls.
3 Now close this window.
4 Now when you look at the clip you see the FX button is turned green, this means you have effects on this clip.
5 Click the green FX button, the window opens up again right to the Glow and Deform Controls, not to the window when you choose the effects.
6. In the Glow presets, choose "White Intense Glow" and in Deform choose "Curve Top." You see the effects show up in the preview window. YOu can also see the FX chain at the top with Glow and Deform checked. To remove an effect just uncheck this box.
7 You could have also used the Remove Select Plug In button on the top right to remove the whole FX control tab.
8 For you next lesson, play the video clip and keep changing the FX controls. Notice what happens to the little timeline at the bottom of the Video Event FX window

Transitions.
1 Pick a clip and put the cursor in the middle and hit S to split them.
2 Select the second clip and while holding the left mouse button down, drag this clp to the left so that it overlaps the first clip.
3 Where the clips overlap you will see a blue and white X form. This is the transition area. The move overlap, the longer the transition. This is by default a crossfade. Play the clip and watch the preview window.
4. To remove the the transition, just drag the second clip back so there is not overlap.
5 To change the transition, right click on the blue and white X and choose Tranistion from the menu. Here you can change to whatever transition you want.
6 Another way to do this is from the Transitions window in the Vegas dock. To make sure you have this open, go the the View menu and make sure there is a check mark next to the transitions. You can also just hit Alt +7.
7 This window will show the transition in the list at the left and the presets and what they look like on the right.
8 Choose Portals from the list and then choose the Jigsaq Puzzle preset.
9 To apply this transition, just click and drag the transition to the overlapped area.
10 For your next lesson, find out how to loop a transition during playback and apply several different transitions, to find which works best.

Preview Window.
1 Undock and resize your window so it is bigger,
2 Choose "Preview Auto"
3. For your next lesson search this forum and find out how to hook up an external monitor to your video camera, so you can preview on a TV.

For encoding.
1 Take a 30 sec0nds piece of video.
2 Choose Render As from the File menu.
3 Render to different formats and different sizes.
4 See how the size of the final format is different. Evaluate the quality of the output.
5 For your next lesson, try to find out which how you deliver the various fomats.

1. Another place besides the VASST site is my newsletters

2. Look at the various rendering options such as RAM Render, Pre-Renders, and Render to new track.

3. Click on the Effects button for the event, track, project, or media. Since the media can be applied in multiple places you may need to search in multiple places. Once you've found the effect you can easily delete it from that screen.

4. Experiment with different settings to see which ones meet your needs.

You should download and install version 5.0b (build 160) just to keep things current.

If you bought a "boxed" copy then use the quick reference guyide & card. All the questions you have owuld of been answered.

If you bought a downloaded copy, then download hte PDF manual. Read it. Almost any "how do i do..." question can be answered by that manual.

Or use the online help ssytem. It IS the manual, but in a help file.

Read the forums.

That covers it. :)

To add to TheHappyFriar's suggestion: take your disc to Kinko and have the pdf documentation file printed and bound so that it lies flat. You'll find that this makes for easy reference and, as pointed out, you'll find just about everything you could ask answered there.

You might also consider printing out interesting threads here on the bb and putting them into an indexed loose-leaf binder. I find this more useful than constantly trying to find tips I thought were useful using the bb search feature. (Just another possibility.)

Also, all the references mentioned above are excellent and worth a regular visit.

Hang in there. It will all come together in time.
