Normalize works...sometimes

Randy Brown wrote on 1/17/2003, 12:33 PM
Hi all,
I have several takes of the same scene using a lapel mic with all levels virtually the same. Some audio clips show gain (under properties) as being around -12db and then when I check normalize, recalculate and then OK it normalizes wonderfully. However about half of them show 0.0 db regardless of what I do and will not normalize. Any thoughts?
While you're here... I rendered some to new track (.avi) and the video was very blurry although I doubt it is related to the problem mentioned above.
TIA,
Randy

Search the word "normalize" in past posts. I believe this issue has come up a few times.

Are you talking about in VV 3.0c or in V 4?

I couldn't find anything in the search regarding my issue John.

wcoxe1, in VV3.0c

Thanks guys,
Randy

I have had several problems with 3.0c and Normalize. Sometimes it just flatlines. I have posted several things about this. Search on:

Flatline
Normalize

Thanks for your PATIENCE John, but I do (at least) know how to use the search engine. I just meant I couldn't find anything pertaining to my particular issue; however the posts wcoxe1 is talking about seem to be similar, so I guess it's a known issue. There is an easy enough workaround anyway by opening them in Sound Forge to normalize.
Thank you,
Randy

FOr whatever it's worth...

You might want to check the audio section of the forums for more info. Somewhere I know there were some posts about this bug, and if memory serves, the later version of VV3 was to have solved it.

Still, might want to make it a normal procedure to do normalizing in a sound editor -- if not Sound Forge, then at least something like Goldwave. For one thing you get much better control over your peak levels rather then setting them to the max (not cool). For another, I think the problem using normalize within VV or similar is that if you have separate audio clips, & normalize one segment of audio, that ignores the next one -- haven't seen it as a track or bus based effect. And normalizing requires the app to look at levels across your entire soundtrack, or else you'd have quiet passages blaring.
