Not licensed for CineForm HD encoding?!

CrazyFace wrote on 10/19/2007, 9:18 PM
Hello all,

I upgraded to Vegas 8 a month ago, and I downloaded and installed the Cineform NEO HDV player to incorporate the quality differences and be able to open up newer Cineform files....

But now I can't render to Cineform at all, it just states that I'm not licensed for cineform encoding.

Short of uninstalling the NEO Player (since I can't open up a few files that way that I have) or purchasing the full version ($250+ is out of my range right now) - what can I do to remedy this problem?

Exactly the same thing happened to me some months ago. As I recall I needed to uninstall everything (both Cineform and Vegas), and then re-install Vegas. I complained about it at the time to Cineform but sounds like the problem is still there.

Not sure if this helps but this is what the "Known Issues" in the official release notes says:

"The CineForm codec that is installed with Vegas 8 is unavailable unless your Windows user account is a member of the Administrators group. To open or render CineForm AVI files, please log on using an account with Administrator privileges."

My user account is an Administrator account.

I uninstalled the player and it renders fine again, but it crashes when loading Cineform v3.3 files :(

Does Vegas have to be installed in its default path?

From the Vegas update page:

"Please Note: Using the default installation path is recommended. The default installation path for Sony Vegas Pro is C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 8.0. Problems such as file format plug-ins stating they are expired or demo beeps occurring when you use Sonic Foundry or Sony audio effects can occur if, during installation, you change the install path to a directory that holds older Sony/Sonic Foundry products."

No...there is a problem with the way Vegas Pro8 recognizes the right Cineform codec. The codec that ships with Vegas is outdated. To force your system to recognize the right CF codec, go into your Vegas Pro8 directory and rename CFHD.dll to somethig else. After that, you should be up and runiing with the right licensed Cineform codec.

Yeah, I actually am in the default path.

I also did rename the dll... and I still have the same problem.

The thing is that I don't have NEO HDV... I have neo player, the cineform people say that it should still work?

Rename the CFHD.dll in the Dony folder and reinstall NEO Player and you should be fine.

Tried that... a few times in fact. Still the same error.

I think you've got a bit of a different problem from that experienced by folks who have been fighting with the right CF codec between Vegas 8 and NeoHD/HDV, etc.

From your post, you've downloaded Neo Player, rather than any of the Cineform encoding tools, e.g. NeoHDV. Of course, Neo Player is a viewer only, and is not an encoding .dll.

So by following the above instructions (which works for people that have NeoHDV, etc.), all you've done is disabled the only Cineform encoding codec .dll you have (the outdated one that ships with Vegas), and replaced it with a newer codec .dll, but that won't encode by design.

Unfortunately, you're a bit stuck. To encode, you'll need to do the opposite steps as described above - i.e. disable the .dll that shipped with Neo Player, and re-enable the (older) .dll that shipped with Vegas.
