I have just brought studio 10 and am having all sorts of trouble. I have also a new laptop a Qusmio 60 which is plenty big enough to handle video files. I'am using a sony HD movie camera but every time I get halfway through editing the programe It stops working or programe not responding. I have reinstalled it a couple of times but the same thing happens I am not that computer savvy and don't know what to do.
I have sent a couple of emails off to Sony but no reply.Hope someone can help it is driving me nuts

This forum sucks. The people that do post usually do help some. Problem is no one usually post much.. Look to creative cow... I have not responding and also issues rendering.... Posted a question and now is buried.. I'm a newb as well.

Sweet Qusmio BTW...

This forum does not suck. If we don't know the answer, then possibly the folks at CreativeCow don't know it either. The problem with the user's question above is that he doesn't give us any clue about what's going on. The "not responding" is very generic.

So how was I suppose to write the question?

You were supposed to tell us exactly what kind of video format we're dealing with, and when exactly the freeze happens, and if there's any debug code generated by the app. By telling us "it's not responding sometimes", does not help us at all.

Hi Eugenia. I have a Sony HDD movie camera which the SMS10 won't recognise. So I saved from the camera to my hard drive and imported from there. They are Mpeg 2 files
I drag them to the time line and edit. That is shorten or take out bits. Everything works fine until I get about 25 or so minutes on the time line when SMS just stops working. I don't get any debug code or anything else It just comes up 'program not responding' and you can wait for an hour and it still wont work. As soon as you click anywhere on the screen it goes white and I have to shut it down. I was using some still photos so I took them out and it still happens. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times and still no good
I can see it is a very good program and I am not too tech savvy so I was thinking I am doing something wrong

Oldredm3, sorry that the board members here were unable to jump when you snapped your fingers.......what a bunch of bastards they are (I hate them too). Especially when you consider how much they are being paid! I think if you use Sony Help, you will have much better luck as they are very knowledgeable and respond instantly. It's very common for them to fly to your home (or where ever is convenient for you) to fix any and all problems just like magic (even ones not Vegas related). I also like your idea of Creative Cow as that is where 'smart' people hang out, as opposed to the official Sony site where only 'dumb' people dwell. We will really miss you, but you have to do what you have to do. Good luck Troll. Cin

Which model is exactly your Sony camera?

So, create a new Vegas project in a new window, select the RIGHT project properties for your source footage in the project properties dialog, and then select and copy/paste the old timeline to the new Vegas window. Close down the old project. Continue editing on the new one, and tell us if it still does that.

Thank you Eugenia. I have to go away for a few week's but will try when I get back.
Today I tried the make slide show button and used 700 photo's in one go. It worked a charm the computer and the SMS Program handled it easy. I even copied it to my hard drive in AVI

Sorry I forgot. My camera is a Sony handycam DCR-SR47E Hard drive

Vegas is not SMS, or whatever this is. Vegas is known to easily crash if there are more than 40-50 many-megapixel pictures in the timeline. You're supposed to batch-convert these images to the size of the project properties before using them in the Vegas timeline.

Hi Eugenia Had time to try that with the copy/paste and soon as I tried to load some more video it stopped. I have deleted all my video and recorded it back onto my hard drive In a folder. Then tried importing it that way still not working.
I will try uninstalling Vegas Movie Studio HD and see what happens. I thought life was suppose to be easy.

Is this your Qosimo F60 Notebook?

While the CPU is fast it has a slow hard drive. You say it's new so it probably has a whole bunch of junk preloaded on it and have unnecessary process running slowing it down. A good application to see what's running is Process Explorer.

What antivirus/antimalware programming are you using if any? It could play a part in your issue.

As your cam shoots standard def MPEG2 PAL files VMS shouldn't have any issue with it. I'm leaning towards your notebook being the issue not VMS. Your project properties are set to PAL also, right?

Thank you for your reply. I think your right. I had no trouble using the desktop and an earlier version of 'vegas. Yes I had the properties set to pal, I have Norton anti virus and I tried putting it in sleep mode but it still crashed. It seems as though it is struggling when I try to add clips.
Can I do the movie in small segments and join it all together before rendering ? Seems I didn't do my homework. They told me this laptop can handle anything and sony vegas was the best version yet (and It is a good product ). Just can't let it beat me
MSmart wrote on 12/17/2010, 9:07 PM
I'm not sure that Norton is causing your problem, but you may be able to exclude the VMS application from realtime monitoring. I use Microsoft Security Essentials and added "C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0\VegasMovieStudioPE100.exe" to the Excluded Processes list.

I suggest installing Process Explorer and open it the next time VMS hangs and see what process getting high CPU utilization. How many process are running on your notebook?

Yes, you can edit in segments then combine later when ready to render. Do a search for combining projects.

If you're going to be doing a lot of video editing, it's recommended to use a second hard drive and not use the OS drive. External USB drives 500GB and up are cheap. I suggest you get one and put your video there for editing/rendering.

Thank you for your response. I will do what you suggested and get an external hard drive. It makes sense I should have been doing that from the start instead of flogging my laptop to death.
It goes to show you only have to talk to the right person. Again thank you I will stop banging my head against the wall . Have a Good Christmas
