nvidia video card

I'm a newbie here...and in the process of assembling a P4 with components
from Fry's and chassis+Power supply purchased where I live and work, Mexico City. Official Vegas dealer here is friendly but not enough to supply
final, missing component, a video card. They recommend an Nvidia but no
specific chip set...I won't be doing any high end rendering, strictly personal, non commercial stuff with material from my Canon GL1..

Would appreciate recommendations for the proper Nvidia chip set and
video card supplier for a basic installation.....?¿

Vegas doesn't really care about the video card. It won't take advantage of any OGL features, so unless you're doing games, a standard vid card is fine. We mostly use the Matrox cards here, but you might want something with an MPEG decoder on it like the NVidia or an ATI Radeon.
For rendering/previewing for the most part, a very expensive card performs just like a cheap one.

I use a cheap 2 year old radeon with dual monitor suport. It works great. I recently put a Nvidia dual head card in my fathers computer that also is great. It is a FX 5200 plus by Mad Dog Multimedia $79.99 from CompUSA. After trying dual monitors, I want to use it all the time.

I got a Radeon 9000 a couple of years ago because it was reasonably powerful, yet didn't get hot enough to need a fan or empty PCI slot next to it. I'm not neccessarily recommending the 9000 (though I am quite happy with it), but be aware of the extra noise and space requirements of some of the newest gaming video cards. Vegas doesn't need the extra horsepower so why deal with extra noise and heat issues if you don't need to.

I'd recomend a DirectX 9 compatible card. You can get some reasonably cheap & IF you ever decided to do any 3d stuff (ie particle illusion, etc) then you're set.

I've got an AIW ATI 9600 Pro. I like it. However, it's still around $170 & if you don't need the mpeg-2/analog capture then I don't recomend it. It would be a waste of $$$. Get a non-AIW card.

Thanks muchisimo for this helpful feedback.
Too bad the Vegas dealers are not trained to
offer this kind of assistance....
