Object in color, rest in B/W

I see lots of people doing something.

Lets sat you see a santa claus sitting in a park, he sits on a bench and everything on the picture is in Black and White exerpt for the santa. He is in clear red nice colors as usual.

Wondering how one would accomplish this.

I thought of using 2 layers and chroma keyer but its kinda hard as.. Well, the object i want to be in color is red and my skin color is. Well, not red but as it got a skin tone close to red it gets B/W as well. Any ideas?

This is called a Color Pass, and Vegas does it quite well, and very easily.
