Off Topic: Goofy Boot problem

This is another one of those silly problems that don't make any sense. I bought a UPS about six months ago. It died. Waiting for a replacement. Now I changed nothing expect my PC isn't plugged into any UPS right now.

I do a cold boot, the hard drive starts to spin up, all front panel lights are glowing, I can hear the power supply fan, CPU and case fans, so no doubt the system has power yet computer won't boot. It freezes before even displaying the BIOS copyright page. The monitor remains blank and totally black.

I need to turn off power switch on back of computer, then press the reset button, then turn power off then back on again, then and only then will the system boot. Been doing this for several days, driving my nuts. Anyone?

Was it a SmartUPS, one of those units that connects to the serial port so that the computer can monitor the power and properly shut itself down if the UPS detects an outage? If so, you will probably have to disable the monitoring software until you get the UPS running again.

When I unplug my external 56K modem from the serial port, I can get a very similar situation on booting. However, I can still get to the bios.

Win XP? Maybe try uninstalling that XP Hot Fix too(along with that monitoring software)... Article Q310437 "PC fails when connected to a UPS".......shotinthedark

Hope you get your replacement soon.
