OFX - a hope for better chromakey?

malew wrote on 9/21/2010, 10:29 AM
I don't know, how really good are OFX plug-ins and is this a chance for Vegas, or not. From a long time I'm looking for good (and not very expensive...) chromakey add-on for Vegas.
What do you use for keying in Vegas? I know, Sony Vegas is NLE no compositing software, but...
Somebody can say - 'what do want to do, Vegas is not enought?'
Answer - I want to key video like this:
Title: Window Set Extension

and other, like smoke, glass, shadow etc.
And with green (blue) spill removing of course!
Waiting for OFX keyer, what is the best keyer for Vegas at this moment?

As I understand from a recent post OFX plugs will work with SVP 10

New Blue Chroma Key is very good and has a spill sup and alpha choke

Back to the clips you highlighted. Vegas as is will handle those clips.

For smoke and glass you can do a garbage mask = use the luminance to get a key.
Vegas IS a compositing NLE.

For smoke and the like it would be better to extract a key from the luminance and use this as a mask rather than chroma key out the black or background color

'Vegas IS a compositing NLE. ' - no, sorry, is not. Vegas is NLE with BASIC compositing function.
And with annoying bugs if you work with generated shadows for example (wrong worklfow).
Smoke - it is not good example. Of course, if I need something like on your video, this is no problem. Lumakey works great.
But try to key blonde pinup-girl smoking cigarettes (with glass cigarette-holder) and with wine glass in her hand.
Or example from my link, with tracker markers, glass etc.

I try New Blue, maybe it works good.

This is red , no it’s not it’s basic red = it’s red

Here is a comparison between Vegas mask composite and New Blue Key, and Boris Red. In that order
There is a lot of green spill on this image, so I had to add levels after the key to clean the whites

Malew I agree a spill suppressor would be very nice in Vegas Crom key.

I also recommend New Blue's Chroma Key. It is part of New Blue Video Essentials II ($79.95 USD), plugs into Vegas, and is well worth every penny. I recently used it on some footage with transparent bottles and it did an outstanding job. I thought I was going to have to export it to After Effects and use Key Light but I tried New Blue and it did the job right in Vegas. This is definitely worth a look.

For a bit more money there is Boris FX which also has a great chroma key, matte tools, and a light wrap which really helps place the foreground subject into the background to sell a shot.

I had a quick try with the sample footage. That DVCproHD's 1.5 PAR is not exactly CK friendly.

I cannot quite understand though why one would want to CK in Vegas when you seem interested in tracking markers. A better native CK'er in Vegas is a reasonable request. Motion tracking and set extension etc is, in my opinion, way outside what we should be expecting of an NLE.

Rory - thank you very, very much for sample video, and for all of you for answers.
On Rory's video the best is of course Red, but is to expensive. But I'm jiggered by NewBlue! I never been interested in NewBlue, because NB plugins are for me in 'wedding video' category. So, I never looking for chromakey in NB plugins!

Bob - I am not professional videomaker and I have to solute any disadventages myself. I want to mix video from my camera with digital object. I user PFHoe for tracking, but next I want to key everything what should be keyed. And at last join it together with Vegas help.
Of course would be great to use f.e. 2D tracking in Vegas, read and save vector masks (and better edit tools, like in Inkscape or CorelDraw), but now I only need good chromakeyer. And I think, NewBlue will enought at this moment. Quality and price are acceptable. Maybe I will be wait for OFX version.

While NewBlue's effects can certainly be used in wedding videos, they are far more universal than that. Many people use NewBlue effects for many other types of videos. You ought to check them out - you might like what you see!
