Okay, what have you done THIS time, Apple?

I can't figure out what Apple has done in my best interest this time... I mean, they do that you know - do things because they thinks it's best for me. Kind of like the government.

Anyway, I have an Intel iMac. I have Vegas 9 on the Windows side, and Final Cut Studio on the Mac side.

The problem I'm having is when I create an mpeg2 file in Vegas it plays fine on the Quicktime player and on the WM player and on mpeg streamclip. But if I try to play the same file on mpeg streamclip or QT on the Mac side, I get no audio.

I'm not doing anything differently than I did a month ago, when it worked fine on both platforms. The ONLY thing I can think of is there has been a recent iTunes update.

Anyone else had this issue?

Of course, Apple Tech says the problem is on the Windows side... despite the fact the files work fine in Windows.

Reminds me of the old "I'm from the IRS and I'm here to help you" routine. Does sound like they are "helping" you though. You might look at the video clips and see what the audio is encoded as. I have run into issues in the past with DVD's where the audio was encoded as mpeg layer2 for NTSC (the NTSC spec says at least one track of the audio has to be either AC3 or LPCM for NTSC DVD's - most players will handle the mpeg layer2 instead, but some of the older ones do not and that is the symptom - "nice show, but no audio".

Use QT Pro on the Mac side, & check what it says about the audio tracks.

That should tell you what's going on.

Interesting. Before the last iTunes update I had both QT Pro on the machine, and the new version of QT the came with Snow Leopard. I also had the twenty dollar QT playback component installed. Now, it isn't on my machine. It's gone. Zap. Vanished. So I went back in Time Machine to when I know for certain I had it. Ain't there. It's Apple magic, and I think it has something to do with the iTunes update.

Anyway, I downloaded the QT component again (and paid again) and now all is well. Thanks.

Bonnnnnng. I feel so darn special.

I'd like to just remove iTunes entirely. If I do that, will it jack up Final Cut Studio or mess up the QT player again?

iTunes is great for FCP when used with Loader, a totally brilliant plug-in. It's so good I laugh every time I use it.

The key is to avoid QuickTime X for any video work. You must use QT 7 for this, and it's on the FCS 3 disks for that reason.
