OMF is largely Avid's creature and so it works best with Avid. Other systems have varying amounts of support for OMF, and Vegas has none.

When my employers were trying to get OMF out of Media100 for finishing in Protools there was much wailing and weeping. It's just not a well supported workflow, even if it's supported at all.

There was some discussion of CuiBono's converter, but when I last looked a few weeks ago they'd sold it to another company who planned to release a new version at NAMM. I don't have time to hunt it down right now but there were posts about it on this forum within the last month.

OMF is standard for a lot of transfers - we use it all the time to transfer post audio from Final Cut pro editors. For conversion, we use EDL Convert (now Pro Convert by SSL) to convert Vegas EDL (and other formats) to OMF going to Nuendo. Many audio workstations support OMF, but Rob is right, it's been hit or miss in some cases. Not sure why Vegas has yet to add it. AAF is no better (if not worse) for cross-app compatibility, at least in some cases.

Ah, well, I haven't torn myself away from the computer yet :-)

Pro Convert is the software I was referring to. Thanks Dedric.

FCP makes a lot of effort to compete with Avid so it makes sense for them to support OMF. I don't really know why Vegas doesn't support OMF but in many cases this sort of conversion has been the realm of third parties like Automatic Duck or Diaquest.

I suspect that the SCS folks have had to pick their projects to fit the resources they have, and OMF wasn't high on the list.

But the mixing console was... okay, okay, I've learned to accept that as a handicap-access feature. And we all believe in that.

I'll chime in just to add another vote for OMF support. My version of FCP (5) will export, but not import, OMF. That's better than nothing.

Cakewalk SONAR does both.

There are ways to move audio back and forth without OMF, so I'm not dead in the water. I could use a conversion utility; but if the point is to eliminate steps in the workflow, that's kind of defeating the purpose, isn't it?

"Handicap-access feature".

I don't see anything particularly ADA compliant about it, but I'm sure you're making fun of the console. Made me look at it, anyway.

You could look at it another way. What possible interest could the SCS people have in supporting OMF vs trying to develop features that would enhance their own products? Yes, it's probably a near-sighted strategy, but product planners look at whatever data they have and decide to cater to whoever is generating the income.

Most of us here think they should be aiming a bit higher than that.

I know I've said this before in this forum, but it would be nice if Vegas played well with others. OMF is a perfect example and, of course EDLs. --- What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. As long as that meets the job requirement, Vegas can't be beat for speedy productivity.
