On screen countdown

Is there a way to do an on screen countdown? I have a video running and I would like to do an overlay with numbers counting up or down. I am thinking that I can use the text nedia and make 10 different boxes, each 1 second long, and put 10, 9, etc. in each box. I was hoping that there was a less time consuming way. Any ideas?

You can create graphics in something like Fireworks, Photoshop, Gimp, Paint.net etc... then import them into Vegas. This way you can have any type of look you want to the numbers.

You can purchase a premade effect, video, flash or images from istockphoto or similar site. That would be the easiest, download and just drag and drop.
Wouldn't cost much for an effect like that, few dollars I would think.

Have someone create the effect you want for you. Someone you know or you can pay someone to do it.

Those are a few ideas for you.

If you want to do it yourself and you create the images in Fireworks or something similar, remember that one second of video is round about 30 frames if you are doing something for DVD. For the web you can have range from 12 to 30 frames, depending what you are doing.

That just means you have to span each number out over multiple frames, 5 to 10 frames per number or your viewers wont see it.

Hope I gave you some ideas.

It's got some extra stuff on it, but just edit out what you don't want to use.
