On Screen Timer?

I'm doing some editing of high school track events. I could brute force a text generated timer but what would be easier and neater would be an automatic countdown timer on screen like on ESPN track competitions. Anybody have any ideas?

You could use the timecode plug-in to generate a clock. If you need it to count in reverse, render it out reverse it.
