Up to my ears in film transfers - working some from the early 30's. Drooling over some of the cars that pass in the background on these old clips. (A fortune in collector cars drive by in about 3 minutes)

Will be assembling some external hard drives when the UPS guy gets here with the enclosures.

Home office is down and out while installing new office suite.

(Would have had no downtime had Ashley Furniture not failed to deliver a key piece of furniture...and subsequently refuse to deliver it until next week- even though the piece is sitting in a warehouse locally. NEVER PURCHASE FROM ASHLEY FURNITURE in the U.S. There. That feels better.)

For me, installing some "real" hurricane storm panels on my windows, instead of the boards I've been using. Hey, hurricane season is barely half over!

One of these days, I need to get my FX1 footage of Hurricane Dennis and the 20-25 ft waves from Katrina captured and processed to share. But I need a couple of weeks without a hurricane to do it...

This weekend is fairly occupied with two film societies that gather here once a month. I'm also exploring a few things about the FX1E camera related to cineframe 25 (in particular motion and measuring impact on vertical resolution). Also looked at the actual impact of diffraction on resolution as aperture is closed (50i mode). Weather is good for being inside.

Restoring an old bootleg concert by XTC. Awful dark footage with an amateur zooming in and out. Lousy onboard mic sound. A buddy with a studio did a brilliant job on the audio and I'm riding the color curves and dynamic noise reduction on the video. The big problem has been synching the video and audio. I made a huge mistake: When I extracted the vobs, I placed the video segments together and did not zoom in to check the audio. As we know, the video and audio never sync even within a vob segment. So I have 3 transitions with empty audio and 1 segment which truncated the audio. Fine at the start and end (which I checked originally) and 1/8 second off in the middle (which I missed), which is enough to really irritate. Been an absolute nightmare to locate and "fix" after the fact. Half ready to kill myself. But this is precious footage so its worth the many hrs I've already sunk into it. I'm racing to get it done by the end of the month because there is an XTC fan club gathering in Europe and I can get a copy to the band as well. I guess with bootlegs there is a legality concern, but its from 1981, I did not do the original, its been in circulation for years, and its an act of love wthout money. So I justify it as my contribution to music history :-)

Helping a fellow member with my 'Reflections' tute but mostly working on a dvd case cover for "Boys Town".

I capture movies from Tuner Classic Movies Channel or even movies from one of my HiDef channels. While not truly HiDef, I can capture in 16x9 with very good quality (both options thru Directv).

Here's a couple of samples of dvd case covers I've done:
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo

Sands of Iwo Jima

I really enjoy trying to come up with a nice looking cover...and now with Vegas, I can produce higher quality dvd menus too.

I should add that these movies are strictly for my own personal enjoyment and am aquiring a fairly decent 'library' of classic movies.

A super day of Vegas training with "The Great One" on Saturday.

Vegging out today after a hectic 10-day fil, and party schedule at TIFF - and tonight, if I don't fall asleep after dinner, will start capturing the filming I did at each of the galas and Norman Jewison's b-b-q last Sunday. at the Film Centre.

Primary thing this weekend - fixing the video system at the acting studio in Toluca Lake, where I study. For years, I've traded out my acting lessons by supplying video equipment and services to my classes. For me, studying acting is important to improving my voice-over ability. Supplying the video was a heafty initial investment, but it has saved me a fortune over the years. It also allows me to own some video toys yet stay out of the video business, which I tried years ago and truly hated.

Anyway, last week, the primary routing switcher died, so I had to come up with a quick and cheap replacement. Oddly, all the local North Hollywood/Burbank used equipment stores which always had too many of those things in days past, only had 'spensive stuff (Over $500.00).

Fortunately, the Orange County MCA-I/PVN Video Swap meet was being held Friday. Got some used routing switchers for the price I wanted, and a Panasonic MX-12 switcher. The MX-10 we were using was working fine, but it looks a little amatuerish, and the buttons are too small. The MX-12 has big buttons, and looks a little more "pro", so I decided to buy that too, for a hundred bucks.

I was a little concerned, 'cause the guy selling both the routing switchers and the MX-12 was from Phoenix, and he kept using the word "absolutely", whenever I asked him a question. "Does this thing work?" ... "Absolutely!"....

I've become wary of the "A" word ("absolutely") over the past few years. It seems that the people who use that word (politicians, sports figures in some sort of trouble, car salesmen, etc.) usually end up being exposed as lying.

Anyway, went up to Toluca Lake on Saturday, Installed the routing switchers ... Had a little scare when the video from the switchers appeared too hot, but I had forgotten to install terminators on the inputs. Plugged them in and all was well.

Had a bit of another scare when I installed the MX-12. One input line worked fine but the other wouldn't pass video throught the switcher. Preview out was fine, but I couldn't get anything through the switcher. Turned out I had forgotten to switch one the the inputs from S-Video to composite. The MX-10, I/O was almost identical, but had no S-Video inputs. All the stuff I bought from the guy worked--absolutely!
