Ongoing Burner Problems

Short version - Sony 510A Dual Burner/Windows XP. I can burn and play (on set-top players) -R and +RW. I have tried everything, but cannot get it to burn a +R that will play in the set -tops. The data is there and it will play on a computer DVD, but will not play on DVD players that I have used to play other +R successfully. I have the latest firmware and have tried burning using DVDA, Nero, RecordNow, and using an image file with DVD Decrypter. I have tried various media that burn and play in my other DVD burner (NEC 1100A). I would like to be able to burn +R in both burners at the same time in order to speed up production without having to hand out 2 different types of media.

Any ideas or things to try?

Is there something special that you're doing with your NEC burner that you aren't doing with the Sony burner? For example the PC with my single format +r burner has the DVD Bitsetter utility on it, so that any +R's that get burnt have a book type of DVD-ROM rather than +R (this allows me to play my +R's on my DVD player, since it doesn't recognize +R media normally). Some burner manufacturers include a utility similar to DVD Bitsetter.

My dual format Pioneer burner doesn't let me change the book type, so DVD Bitsetter doesn't come into play. As a result though, any +R's burnt on this burner will not play on my DVD player - I'm forced to use -R media only on this burner (at least until I get a new player).

You may want to download the DVD bitsetter utility from dvdplusrw.org and see if it will work with your NEC drive (it won't work with your dual format drive) - the utility will tell you not only what media you have inserted, but what the book type is on the media - so for example, if you see that +R's burnt on your NEC show with a media of +R but with a Disc type of DVD-ROM, then you know that your NEC burner is setting the book type to DVD-ROM - and that would explain possibly why the +R's work when burnt on the NEC but not on the Sony.

Just a thought.

Thanks, that sounds like it might be what is happening. I'll check it out and post back with results.
