Only recording on one channel

I need to add some voiceovers to some work I am doing. I am running XP SP2 on 2 dual proc Intel 2 gig ram 1TB HD. I bought a PreSonus Inspire GT in order to get the balanced lines in. I set it up right, the mixer for the Inspire shows left and right channels are recognized. Everything seems fine.

The problem comes in when I try to use Vegas or Sound Forge. I set them both up in Preferences -> Audio Device as having the Inspire GT as my soundcard. When I arm a track to record, though, it only records, say the left side.

This card (more like a breakout box) has 2 balanced XLR inputs. When I put the mic in channel one, the left side records. When I put the mic in channel 2, the right side records. Wierd. When I monitor the software that comes with the Inspire, it shows L & R are playing simulatneously. Please help a brother out!

Vegas is just showing the signals it can see on input.

The basic problem is that you have a mono mike, which is normal for recording VO, and you are expecting to see stereo.

You don't want to be recording stereo for VO as all you would be doing is wasting disk space because the source is, and should normally be, mono.

Solve your problem by clicking on the Input selector box, to the right of the track name and left of the record arming button, then select the mono input that your mike is plugged into, left or right ,and now record the VO in mono, as it should be, and save 50% of the disk space a stereo file takes up.

It's what happens professionally and I've been doing it that way for film and broadcast TV for 30 years now.
