I deleted some audio but also deleted the video without realising it as I was in close up to the audio
Then saved only to realise my mistake when I reopened the project
Is there a way of going back or have I already stepped in it
eh? I don't know HOW far the AUTO bak goes? But maybe, maybe it is still at the previous? Also, if Vegas isn't allowed to "swallow" what it should, I can get a separate VEG or BAK secreted somewhere.
Try a search NOW for BAK and/or VEG. You COULD be lucky.
And now HERE'S a plug for Edward Troxel's Auto Save Script. Of course you ARE running that, aren't you? There you have options to save in all sorts of ways.
But, basically a "Save" AND close and reopen will remove the UNDO buffer . . or it SHOULD! Also I am a serial Vegist - I make many MANY veggies.
Get Edward's thingie - it has saved my bottom on many MANY occasions and has stopped me from . . er . . stepping-in that other stuff you mentioned too!
How did you delete? If you just deleted from the timeline, the media will still be wherever it's been all along and you can re-add it.
If however, you deleted it from Project Media using the Right click "Remove from project and delete file" then you have taken it off your hard drive and will need to recapture.
Yes Grazie - the tapeless revolution isn't all it's cracked up to be, but I do have back ups of everything I've shot on the EX1.
One aspect I find harder is finding a specific piece of footage from say 75 clips from a day's shoot. Previously I would capture a whole tape as one clip, name regions in trimmer for each desirable sequence, but now I don't have that option (one clip), so there are many places to look instead of one.
Maybe I should bite the bullet and learn the Media Manager, then I could play tag .... or maybe use subclips, which I assume I could sort into bins in Project Media.
It was the dancers from Riverdance and as the first dancer turned it cut to a different dancer in the next position and so forth
So that it looked like one dancer moving changing shape as they moved across the floor
So all that work got deleted
The real problem was: it was for a meeting which some guys were flying to in a few hours time; they had approved the clip the day before
So I redid the whole thing rendered and MADE IT but I must have aged 5 years in 3 hours
If I used Avid or FCP I wouldn’t have made it
I know this is going to happen again so moving forward was wondering what can I do in future.
The main thing seems to come down to how often you saved the project. It's always a good idea to save after each task is completed, and also use Save as at each significant point so you have several versions available if necessary.
Vegas does save a backup every 5 minutes, if autosave is enabled in General Preferences. Backup files are saved in the location specified in the Temporary files folder box on the General tab of the Preferences dialog, but they are deleted when you exit the application, so you need to realise any accidental actions before closing!
As Grazie recommended, Ed Troxel's Auto Save script is a great idea. (I believe it's also part of Excalibur ....?)
Again - it depends on where you cut it. Timeline or that other thing that I never use (trimmer).
(Also a plug for Excalibur - love that autosave)
First, media on the timeline is an event, not a clip. If you cut the event on the timeline and deleted the piece that you cut, then you haven't lost anything. Vegas is a non-destructive editor. Simply grab the edge where you made the cut, and drag.
OK Steve I have a series of instances cut from my source any of which can be extended [all cut on timeline] I also never use trimmer
Now say 6 instances are axed accidentally.I have no option but to redo the exact cuts from scratch
Or develop the habit of saving the same project under a different name say “Riv 1” and “Riv 2”
And auto save every 3 min or so . but the auto save just updates the last save so if an unnoticed mistake happens then your auto save will be useless.
Will Excalibur solve the problem of creating auto saves independent of the last auto save rather than just updating the last auto save thereby actually saving the mistake and now you cannot backtrack once you have left the project
"Save as at each significant point so you have several versions available if necessary."
Peter do you save manualy or how do you auto save to get a new version of the same project
Yes I tend to do manual saves, but sometimes I forget ....
I've just checked out Excalibur's Autosave - you can tell it to automatically save every XX minutes and it will save a date/time version in two separate locations if you choose, so this would certainly have saved you a few hours and grey hairs!
I have now set Excalibur to do it for me - should have done this years ago!
Peter
edit - I should have mentioned that Excalibur does much more than this - it has a dozen or more other functions, which can save so much time, as can UltimatteS. They both help put Vegas into a whole new league ....

When I use AUTO Save script it saves "iterations" of the veg in a folder I have named "Excal Auto Save Backup". I have set it up to Auto Save on 10 minutes, and of course there IS an option to save more frequently.
Rory, Auto Save is NOT just saving the existing VEG. It saves a NEW veg, but with your existing original name.
I am now looking at my Excal Auto Save Backup folder. In it I have some 700 veggies ( phew! time for a clean out . . ), of which I am looking at a project that has been Auto Saved - same MAIN name - but it is saving at 10 minute intervals. http://www.jetdv.com/vegas/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2661Actually, Rory, see the screen shots and Edward's commentary . .. he says it far better than I![/link]
