I haven't gotten it to work properly either.. But I've gotten around it by using Quicktime to export the audio of the file to a .WAV and then grouping the .WAV together with the video in Vegas.

Just a workaround to get you by for now..

FYI, I can open up a DivX 5.0 video in VV 3.0a, but I haven't tried opening one with any audio. I can get the video-only DivX file to show in the preview window as well as send it out to an external monitor. It does play pretty jumpy, I gather because VV is working overtime to stream a codec it doesn't officially support. I haven't tried to render it to any other format though.
