You are right. In the first couple of betas you could open MPEGs but
support for it was dropped because performance was not reliable and,
until it is, will be excluded from Vegas. There may be a plugin in
the future. There were some earlier posts about this...

MPEG was dropped because the code that we had for MPEG wouldn't seek
accurately. If you wanted to start a frame 90, for instance, the
plugin would start randomly anywhere between 80 and 100. AND it
would be different each time.

This makes it essentially unusable for a editor. In effect you could
only reliably play clips from the beginning. No pulling in an MPEG
and cutting it into pieces, or using a part from the middle of a file.
The code we had just didn't do that. AND we aren't allowed to fix
the code either.

We know that MPEG is important, we just couldn't get it working
with the code we had in hand. And licensing new code was going
to delay the product.
