Organization

What a great forum! You folks are the BEST.

Would someone address the basic concepts of track, media pool and explorer organization with regards to total project organization? I'm an experienced editor, but new to VV3. As you know, on any sizable project, there's lots of "stuff" to find and organize. In the AVID we can separate things into "bins". What is a good way to work in VV3?

If you are doing a lot of individual "track effects" those tracks can begin to pile up. How do you organize them. Can you collapse them, or sub folder them? If not, then how are you experienced folks organizing them?

Same with media pool. Is there a way to "folder" or "alt media pool" them to separate (for instance) titles, graphics, voice overs, on camera stuff, pre-renders, mixdowns, etc?

Also, is there a way to get other track colors. I find the ones supplied very subtle and pretty, but I'd like some "glaring" colors to truly separate things.

thanx in advance,
v.

Whew, you ask some of the same questions I have been wondering about! A friend who made the decision to implement FCP in their station instead of VV was strongly critical of VV's media management - he in fact likened it to a 'joke'. As you aptly point out, bumpers, VO, music beds, graphics, various reels, etc. are all play a part in a project . . . and tend to be reused with other projects.

Unfortunately, I have only just now built a workstation for VV and am about to install it for the first time in order to start working with it (well, not quite the first time, I did install it on an office computer, putatively to look it over, but have never had a chance to mess with it and hence, have subsequently had it removed from there). In any case, my pal made these observations to me more than once while I was eyeballing what themarket offered (he's fairly objective fellow so I listened to his points) thus, I too am hoping more experienced editors will jump in and tell us how they organize life with VV. Sorry I cannot be of help yet.

you can rename folders by right clicking on the track header
also, this is the way to change track colors too---go down to display track colors and choose a new color
tyi, i find working with vv3 incredibly easy
i did a music video for a friend of maybe 50 tracks--it was simple
i just renamed each track
good luck

I am quite new to VV and am trying to learn the same things you guys are, plus how to edit. Will watch your topic. I liken this to learning a spreadsheet. Easy to do some formulas, but when you get to the end, you have a mess cause you did not lay it out very good in the start. I learned real quickly that the media pool is neat that it keeps track of all the files no matter what folder you are pulling them from. But it soon became apparent to me that the .veg file was the only one that knew which file I used from where. So I tend to (so far) put all my project files of any kind into only a few folders and final files into just one, so I know where vv is finding them and putting them. I may be all wet, cause I still have a long way to go, but it helped me get through my first project. Especially cause I am using Win 98SE with file limits. The forum helped me solve problems on that one. Good luck and if you learn something, post it please for us newbies.

sometimes on really big projects--i have only done 2 to date-- i create multiple veg files
i do the project in incrememnts
then i copy and paste then together for the finale project
this way i only have to render once
and i don't have a messy timeline with stuff all over the place--like audio, voice overs--24 tracks etc.
i think everyone has there own style, but this seems to work for me
good luck

I am sure this will be addressed in 4.0.
