My high school team just participated in a 24 hour film festival this weekend. If you have not tried to conceive, write, shoot, edit, and sweeten a short film within 24 hours from a genre, props list and a dialog line given to you by an event, then you have missed out. It separates the men from the boys in a hurry. You have to know where you are going and shoot for the edit without much left on the cutting room floor.
We scripted in 4 hours, shot in 13 hours and posted in 4 hours.
Locked up in a school with 16 teenagers for 24 hours was an experience all its own. The event was mostly professional and college folks, but we thought we would try anyway. 52 started, 34 finished. 24 will be screened next weekend. No matter what happens, it was a learning experience for the kids to see how planning pays.
