My wife is an artist who hates computers and has just completed a Photoshop CS2 course in only about 6 hours of lectures and has done some good work. Don't be intimidated - one you have learnt layers and makes the rest flows easy.

I guess I should have translated their title to "59 good places..." :O)

I have mixed feelings about Lynda's training. Some are great, some are boring (it depends on the trainer), viewing clips online gives you the low res version with lots of zooming in and out, and the only way you can get the media referred to and used in the training programs is to pony up $375.00 for a Premium subscription.

VTC is another company that is very much like Lynda. Same thing really, just different trainers. 450 courses, 60,738 video tutorials(of which 10,000 are free), $30 a month, and their videos are more clear than Lynda's, especially in the user interface parts.

See this to watch 23 recently released VTC Photoshop CS3 video training clips for free!

Total Training (Photoshop and tons more) and Ripple Training (FCS only) have great DVD ROM-based high resolution video training where you can really see everything clearly. More expensive but best if you've got the money.

Learning Photoshop takes two things more than what you can get from any courses: lots of practice, and the realization that you will never learn all of it.
