OT: 64 Bit apps for XP 64

p@mast3rs wrote on 9/21/2005, 6:17 AM
Getting my new laptop today (AMD 64 3700+) and was wondering what 64 bit apps are even out there to decide if I should install XP 64. Anyone have any idea?

Now I can join the camp wondering when Vegas will be 64 bit as well. Hopefully it will be before V7 but I dont feel like it will be. Anyone know about that either?

I KNOW that you can get executables For Quake 3 Arena & Unreal Tournment 2004 for 64-bit linux.

I also belive that Maya & Lightwave support (or will) Win 64 (maya actuatly supports 64-bit SGI's already.. has since it was released)

you might have better luck find linux 64-bit programs though (you coud duel boot. I plan to duel boot 64-bit linux & Win2k in the near future)

I am totally surprised by the lack of Video/NLE progs since 64 bit was designed with video/multimedia in mind. I think 64 bit is a bit premature since there doesnt seem to be a whole lot of apps to support it. Hopefully that changes a lot within the next year.

I guess that all depends on how you look at it.

The OS developers would like to wait for more apps; the apps developers wait for the OS developers.

I guess it all sorta works out in the end.

"The OS developers would like to wait for more apps; the apps developers wait for the OS developers."

The only problem with that is that WXP64 was in beta for well over a year and many 3rd party developers had plenty of time to begin developing for future support. Oh well, I guess thats what we get for being on the bleeding edge of technology.

I think this is a case of supply leading demand. While there will always be a small number of us who are seeking Warp 10 speed computers, most people are perfectly happy with the current crop of hardware and software. For most folks, the extra speed is liking owning a Maserati: fun, but hardly justifiable and not terribly practical. Look at the render times DSE has posted using X2 chips and 32-bit software: it's kind of hard to imagine how things could get much better.

Once the software and peripherals folks come up with a way of harnessing all that horsepower to do something that's truly innovative and simply impossible to do with 32-bit, (like, I don't know, real-time HD capture and simultaneous transcoding to formats playable on my cel phone, RSS, PSP, and wireless e-mail at full resolution, all in the blink of an eye) then and only then, you'll see 64-bit take off.

That's going to take a while, though.

Search for previous posts, I think B_JM said here that Vegas runs fine on XP 64.

A bigger concern may be getting drivers for all your devices.

64-bit has been around for years, just not in the PC market. Most companeies won't bother making 64-bit stuff because they don't want to invest the money, or their "market research" says it's not worth it.

I'm expecting Vegas 7 to be 64-bit. no reason why it shouldn't be. I'm expecting all software in 3 years to be 64-bit. We'll have WinXP 64 & Vista out by then and software dev's LOVE to claim full support for the newest versions of windows. Most programs it won't really help though. Most programs most people use anyway.

10 years actually.

SGI workstations and more.

Just installed 64XP and there are some problems. Matrox APVe not working correctly. Modem not working correctly. Cannot load Viewsonic LCD monitor software. Loading the .net was a nightmare. Loading the media manager is impossible at this time. All of the raid setups are fine as the motherboard drivers. Some of the N-videa drivers had to be downloaded from the N-videa site as the Gigabyte site has old 64X drivers. The Java driver was fine. (raid gui) The network drivers are compatible with the 32 bit drivers. The Sony V6.0c seems to work OK even the scripts, as Forge, Acid, DVD-A3C. Have not installed anything else as I am trying to find a modem that works and also trying to figure out why the Matrox is frozen in "1 monitor setup". I first set everything up in 32 bit and it was a piece of cake. Might go back.

i thought it was a decade, just wasn't 100% sure (SGI's rule)
