OT: 7200RPM 2.5 Laptop Drives

A friend is about to order a laptop with a 7200RPM 2.5" drive and asked me for advice. I told him my only concern would be heat (thus life) of a 7200RPM 2.5" drive. I know 7200RPM is rather new for laptops, but has anyone here heard anything pro/con yet with laptops?

This isn't going to be used for much in the way of video editing, maybe some CAD, but otherwise pretty light duty stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

Cool (pun intended), I'll pass over the info.

Have had a 60 gig 7200 rpm for a year...no problems. BUT, I do use a "cooler pad" which offers a lot of extra cooling for the laptop...definitely worth it.

Bought my first laptop at Christmas time. It came with a 4000 rpm drive. Can't believe how sluggish it is for disc intensive activities. (by intensive, I mean closing/opening programs as well as processes that truly tax the disc.)

2.5 inch drives are going up in capacity - I think I'll be springing for a faster drive when the price is right.

Tell your friend to spend the extra money for at least a 5400 rpm drive.

Toshiba just introduced the MK2035GSS 2.5" hard drive. It's a 4200rpm drive but it's 200GB and uses Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology. With an areal density at 178.8 gigabits per square inch, it will perform like a drive with a higher RPM. It's SATA only, so no way to retrofit it into a laptop with IDE drives...
