OT-A few Gearshift questions..

Hi all,

Look forward to seeing the Vasst folks next week in Orlando..
It looks like there is a new version of Gearshift, my version is 1.1.034006 and i see on the Vasst site that the litlle tutorial picture has a newer version number 1.2.1.. So looks like i missed an update?? Just download the demo to upgrade to the new version??

I am a little confused by the Intermediate files.. These files ar kind of like a proxy (yes i have used the DV files as Proxy and have a firm understanding of this concept) but theyintermediate file allows you to continue to edit at the HDV resolution, but they are much more snappier to edit on the timeline than the .mt2 files, correct? if you choose to use the intermediate files to edit, and then you finish up the edit, can you just render out to tape as mt2, or to a file as HD 1080i ?? Or do I need to shift gears to another format here??
Also under the 4:2:2 YUV-HD Media list what is the difference between the file type HD 1080-60i YUV and HD1080-60i YUV(GearShift)
In other words when it has the "(GearShift)" next to it??

Thanks,
Mike Moncrief

First, just download the latest version, and you'll have automatic updated software.
Second, when you're editing the proxies, they're not the same resolution, they're actually DV put into widescreen to emulate HD.
So, you edit in DV proxy or CineForm intermediate, whichever you convert to with GearShift. When you're done editing, you'll "shift gears" and replace the DV proxies with either m2t for print back to tape, or with 4:2:2 YUV for HDCAM output, or CineForm for down sampling to MPEG for DVD delivery if that's your final output.
Some folks never shift gears, they just use the DV proxy for final output.
See you next week in Orlando, Atlanta, Chicago, NYC, LA, or San Fran!

Douglas, if the proxies are to be used as final output, would you recommend using Best quality before creating them, or is this not necessary?
