OT: A little UDMA Question

donp wrote on 11/6/2003, 9:38 AM
I had to replace my capture drive (Primary slave) last week. The old drive was seen by the PC (XP Pro without SP1a) as UDMA5 as is the (Primary master) drive currently. The new drive Is seen as UDMA2. I also installed the new cable that came with the new drive. The new drive is a Maxtor 160 gig Ultra ATA133. I have no problem with captures. I was curious if the UDMA2 vs UDMA5 could be an issue.

Thanks

Unlikely since you don't really need UDMA 5. However, they probably should both be set the same to dispell the finger being pointed in that direction if you ask for help with a software or hardware problem.

OK How do I go about setting that? I have always assumed the machine did that. Do I need to do that in the bios settings or elsewhere?

The inquiring mind wants to know.

Thanks

Did you use BIOS to "auto detect" the drive? Just kind of odd it would set up the drive to run only at mod two which is very slow. It isn't that Vegas needs it for rendering or other stuff, just that transfering files, using the drive for other things will be much slower than it otherwise would be.

You did use the 80 wire cable, right?

If the drive came with a 133 IDE card you can install in a emply slot and plug your drive into that. It runs its own BIOS routine ahead of your reg BIOS. Not that you have to do it, just another approach.

Not sure about the 80 conductor cable thing, I'll have to check. The MB is set to "auto detect" I use XP pro with out SP1a so the op sys only sees 132 of the 160 gig. I was wondering if that had someything to do with it?

You need to get either a card (the WD comes with the promise card), or at least for now, you should partition the drive 132/rest so you can use the remainder. I would just get a card--you will probably develop the HD adiction and want it later (plus, I run all my Harddrives (six, plus my DVD burner and my CD burner on separate cables as master). I only use one of the secondary cable adapters to run a removable HD (using the cases). Plus the card should autodetect at the higher speed, which won't require adjusting the bios. It does delay startup about 20 seconds as it autodetects, but worth it. In addition, XP pretty much handles the IRQ issues, making instalation easier.

Couple words of caution. If for whatever reason you set up a drive so its less than its real capacity due to limitations of your BIOS or something like that be sure you remove all your files and shift them elsewhere FIRST then reformat the drive. If you don't and just plug the drive into a interface card that sees its true capacity you could end up with a real mess.
