OT - A motorcycle in my CPU ?

Hey guys...

Had a bit of hardware trouble this morning and just wanted to share the problem/solution with you all in case you come across anything similar....

First of all let's say I'm not at all a hardware guy, I can put in a graphcs/sound/RAM card but that's about it so I was kinda nervous when I turned on the computer this morning and heard the equivilent noise of a small motorcycle coming out of my computer.

I leaned down and listened to where it was coming from and it seemed like the graphics card. So I popped open the case, and sure enough, it looked like the fan was grinding away. ( oh no... )

I turned everything off, and pulled out the GPU ( Geforce FX5700 ) and saw a layer of dust on the screen protecting the cooling fan. ( I know, shame on me ) So I blew that off and tried again...

Still the same grinding noise.....darn....turned off everything and yanked it out again and noticed upon close inspection.....the wire connecting to the power plug for the fan had slipped up into a groove of the fan compartment. I moved the wire away, and sure enough that was the problem - the power wire had slipped out of place, and was rubbing up against the spinning blades of the fan thus making all that racket.

Whew !!!

Just thought I'd share this for anyone that may have a similar problem in the future.

Stan

Reminds me of when I was a little kid on a bicycle.

I got a cheap motorcycle sound by fastening a piece of cardboard to the front fork with a clothes pin, so it flapped between the spokes...

:O)
