OT: Advice and opinions sought

I have my Canon GL1 in for repair (Mack) and found out that the firewire connector is loose from the board. Mack sent it to Canon who said it was a 'force' issue (Which it is not!). They want $675 to repair. Meanwhile Mack (who has the extended warranty) wants $375 to repair if they determine it is a 'force' issue. (If they don't I am considering the Attorney General's Office in NY)
I have searched the web and discovered I can buy some new minidv camcorders for under $375. So, if I cannot get Mack to honor their extended warranty, is there any reason I still cannot use the 3CCD GL1 to record video then dump back the video onto the computer using a less expensive single CCD miniDV camcorder? I believe I won't lose any quality during the firewire 'dump' to the computer. Please advise.
Also, anybody out there who can think of a less expensive alternative to what I thought of? (MiniDV tape deck... whatever.
Thanks for feedback.

You can use any device to print it to hard drive. *sometimes* various devices don't like tape from dissimilar devices, but it's more a problem when dealing with DV/DVCam going to a non DV/DVCam deck or camera. The CCD's don't mattter when it's just printing from tape to drive.
That totally blows, having to spend 400.00 for a small fix like that!
