Yes. AMD is introducing 6 and then a 12 core in the near future. Why? AMD believes that the current programming is very limited for multi-core cpus. They are pushing, like IBM, more programmers to think in "parallel" in task programming. The current theme is that most apps are not ready for 8 core or even 4 cores. Its expected that 4 core programming will catch up soon, but 8 core will badly be use by those designed apps and suffer serious performance issues. So , mid clock speed for 8 core or a fast clock speed for 4 to 6 core, most designers think the most bang for the buck for software, hardware and energy will be in the fast 2-6 core catalogue for a while. Once the apps improve or advance caching designs approaches 64m, then 12,16 and more cores will produce the best cost benefit.
