OT - an aside about OT

This week there's an OT about the current airport plots, etc (see elsewhere).

These types of "non-Vegas" issues pop up occasionally on this site; sometimes get quite heated and often have other people saying, "take it somewhere else".

But I'd like to offer a differing opinion.

You see, I've been involved as a reader and sometimes contributor to the Sony Vegas site for a whole bunch of years. I try to peruse the site whenever I have some time (not a usual event), and put in my two cents, where I think it can help.

I cop to "just being an artist" my whole life. I don't have an educated political opinion or stance. My total worldview input is derived from local newpapers, some TV ... and this site.

While I have met and know a huge amount of people, my personal social life is extremely limitied, by choice. And you DON'T talk politics or religion to clients.

So, I like the OT part of this site.
I like having input that is totally international.
And I like seeing forthright opinions from people that I have learned to respect and to trust. Most of what is written on this particular site (non-Vegas) is simply hearfelt opinion, and some of it is very well researched, again, by people that I "Know" simply from hanging around here.

I guess I could learn a lot of "non-Vegas" (i.e. political, social, and "other" issues) by subscribing to polictical, social and "other" sites, but who the heck would/could I trust on them? If you're in a political forum, you automatically are subjected to opinions of activists.

Here I have family.

I say keep it up. I've learned many things and experienced many points of view from folks all over the world on this very site.
I guess if you don't like "OT" stuff, well, gosh... err... hey... just don't click it. There's still an amazing amount of "movie-based" skills to be learned here. It's the best thing about Vegas - this site and it's contributors.

best and thanks to all,
v

Vic, WAY too OT. Take it somewhere else.

Just kidding....

I agree, these OT topics are sometimes a pleasant diversion, sometimes a waste of time, sometimes informative, and sometimes hilarious. But always among a friendly group. I have no problem with them.

I also like them and occasionally contribute, but mostly read.

And these days, it is WAY more civil than it used to be and is a great way to get different points of view and opinions, all without having to endur name-calling or ethnic slurs. I say keep it up.

Vic, agree whole-heartedly with your view. Most Vegas contributors are polite and informed about whatever is posted and those attributes carry through to OT topics. Just as Vegas offers different approaches to every editing problem, so it's good to hear other people's rational thoughts on more contentious matters. Of course these OTs have to be just occassional diversions, but that doesn't mean that the subjects are trivial.

I'll second all of the above remarks.

I haven't been around this forum for very long but I am surprised at some of the OT's. I'm surprised at how sensitive some of the subjects could be and how they have the potential of causing 4 alarm flames. However, I don't recall ever seeing any topics that have degraded to mud slinging. They just seem to be a healthy discussion of viewpoints.

Kudos to all!
