OT: Anyone Using SSD

Just looking around the forum, I don't see much on solid state disks. I will be updating my Q6600 to an i7 system when I go to Win7 later this year. I have been contemplating using an SSD for the primary drive for OS and applications and creating a couple of Raid0 drives as editing/storage disks. I have been reviewing the many articles on SSDs (recent one on Anandtech.com is quite revealing) and with the fall in prices and fixes for the controllers/memory wiping, SSDs are looking like a viable alternative to Velociraptors. Even with the vraptors in Raid0, a single SSD outperforms them and costs about the same.

So, I was wondering if some of you are using SSDs and what has been your experience?

I just did the same thing. Upgraded to an i7 920 with 12 gig RAM and Win 7 64 bit. For my boot drive I got the Patriot Torqx M28 Series PTX128GS25SSDR 2.5" 128GB SATA II Internal Solid state disk (SSD). I can't complain at all with 45 sec boot time and applications that open in a blink. Most of the time when I'm just surfing the web, my other 6 drives just power down. It's a pricey luxury but I figured it's worth it to me to have it now then to wait and with a 10 year warranty I think I'll get my money's worth.

Thanks, Jim. That's exactly the configuration I am contemplating. I suppose you are using Win7 RC1. Does it have the TRIM utility or will we have to wait until the RTM version comes out?

What has been your experience with Vegas using the Patriot and Win7? Are you using VP9-32 or 64?

Are your other drives in Raid arrays or singles?

If you want fast drives I think you would be better off waiting for SATA3 to come out - should be available in the next 6 to 12 months. This will certainly smoke most technologies - LSI has a RAID card out now that supports it - just no drives available at this point.

I'm using RC1 and just about to do a clean install to RTM. As far as i can tell RC does have the TRIM tool - whether or not it's the same in RTM I don't know. I'm running 8c (32bit) vegas and the only comment I can make relative to the SSD is that it loads real fast. Other than that the SSD doesn't really come into play as I render to a hard drive. None of my drives are in RAID but all are 100% backed up with Goodsync.
