Actually, the artical is about dynamic range, which is a different thing to spectrum.

My spectral sensitivity has reduced greatly, as happens with age and more rapidly with men than women (presbycusis).

My dynamic range has also dropped, largely due to tinnitus (ever present low level noise) which masks the quiet passages.

My preferred type of music is classical, which normally has high dynamic range. If I play a commercial CD in my car, I often find that the quiet passages are lost in the general road noise, so I have been toying with compressing the dynamic range first to reduce this problem.

I fully agree that much popular music has too little dynamic range. I remember thinking 50 years ago that they aim for 100% modulation for 100% of the time.
