"Bath Tissue"???
What is it with those Americans?
How many rolls of that stuff do you need to dry yourself after a bath?
Can you use it after a shower?
Or maybe it's really "Toilet Paper"?
Hope I haven't offended anyone using the "T" word in a public forum.

That depends.
When you want to impress the chicks with your high level of hygiene/suaveness, using a waft of that just right masculine scent, does the bottle say "Eau de Toilette" or "Toilet Water"?
As any French "room service technician" knows, we Americans dry ourselves with "Bath Tissues" and wipe ourselves with "Face Cloths" - which is why no French hotel catering to furreners puts wash cloths on the towel rack. They are "sick and tired" of those brown streaks. I have no idea what this means re: Ipods, except that most of the downloaded video is *maybe* as good as brown streaks on French wash cloths.

Here's another potential flaw with this product--What do you do when the National Anthem is played???
So maybe the device needs to be more sophisticated and have some low-priority thread that monitors for all known National Anthems, or maybe have different versions that are sold in different regions and which have the triggers for those specific National Anthems preinstalled. It could have Region Codes, just like DVDs, and when you first buy the product you have maybe 5 uses before it locks into your region.
Help me here, I'm getting carried away with this, and I have other work to do today.
Sorry to be straight guy here, but "bathroom tissue" is no more mixed up than "toilet paper."
Why?
"Toilette" is a French word that refers to freshening up, putting on make-up, fixing the hair, etc. (originally in the royal courts). The origin is 'toile," meaning "cloth/table cloth" which here referred to the cloth that all the makeup gear was wrapped up in (kept in) and then laid out on a table in front of a mirror. The word "toilette" simply meant the use of the "toile."
Even back in those days women took their time to do these things, so they didn't want to leave to do what everyone has to do [in those days, fill a bucket], and from this was born also euphemisms like, "I need to go powder my nose."
Much later, real "indoor plumbing" was invented. This had to be put somewhere, and what could be more natural than a closet? The W.C., the Water Closet, was born.
As hygiene standards changed and some medical doctors dared challenge the scientific establishment in the 19th century by claiming that it wasn't life threatening to take a bath more than once per year, home indoor baths became popular.
Since those needed plumbing too, what could be more natural than combining the WC and the bathroom? And in America, people "went to the bathroom" even at the office, because this had become such an established concept, and "toilets" were more associated with bodily functions than with makeup.
But "Eau de Toilette" is still sold at cosmetics counters, and it is of course not "toilet water" as a [sloppy, incorrect] direct translation would indicate, but a perfume-like scented product with 1-6% perfume concentrate (instead of the 15-40% in perfumes).
IMO ipods are the most overated underdeveloped devices ever to hit the planet.
You've got that right. Check out the reviews from people who have owned one more than a year. When a product drops from a 5 star to a 3 star rating it's not so unthinkable that there is a market for an "iPod killer." A 30 gig model with memory chips instead of a hard drive and a consumer replaceable battery would be nice.
I think you're missing the point on the 70 million iPods sold.
I think you are underestimating millions of pissed off customers who bought those 70 million iPods. I won't be buying another one. I've had mine replaced several times already. Once it breaks out of warranty I go elsewhere. I'm actively looking for an iPod killer and I'm not alone.
Every product is a compromise. I like that the iPod doesn't need a manual, and that there is such a huge amount of programming for it. Not just MP3s that will play on anything, but for example useful video tutorials for pro applications, and an important podcast community that is there primarily because of iPods.
I also liked that I could get "military armor" for mine for less than eight bucks, and a lot other accessories that are just plain helpful.
Separately, all the features aren't so important, but the sum of it all is impressive and I don't expect Zune to make even the slightest dent in this.
Somebody else could do it, but it won't be MS for sure, and it is really difficult to dethrone a king who is sitting on so much content.
hmm..
okies, well i bought a sansa 512mb mp3 player with an SD slot..
this was to go up against the ipod shuffle..
i paid 50bux for it. new.. shuffle was $150 for the same memory with NO SCREEN, NO SD SLOT, and shithouse battery...
Features is the first part...
now i can upgrade my SD card to fit 4gb, which brings it to ipod nano spec (or whatever the 4gb one is called)... PLUS ive got the additional 512mb...
I bought AAA NMH batteries for 8 bux... these last for at least 5 hours on full crank on sennheiser noise cancelling buds at 112db SPL
normal listeing, hey last about 12 hours each..
baterry life and versatility is the second..
thirdly, sound quality. SRSWow is severly underated, but to most laptops that use this feature, its a godsend. Same with the Sansa.. i am yet to come across an mp3 player of this price range, which sounds this good.. i kid you not, from Lower basss frew, to full 7 band eq, stereo spread, freq focus, playlist and audiobook configuration, shuffle and album options, it absolutely POOS on ipod..
all this for 50bux... im not compaining and im glad im not an ipod-cloner...
as for how many ipods were sold.. to me, that dont mean shit, coz as far as im concerned, i WOULD buy something thats featrue rich, but relatviely unknown.. but thas me... others like to follow the herd...
50 bucks can't be beat with iPods, but you think they are all about following the herd. Not quite, although that is a co-factor. Apple created a whole new market, a new way to use these, way beyond "pocket MP3 player" and Sony etc. missed the boat.
See my post above, they created a content market and that's what drove the iPods to 76.7M.
"See my post above, they created a content market and that's what drove the iPods to 76.7M."
I beg to differ...
they DIDNT create the content, or the market.. it was already there.. They just cashed in on it and marketted a product which allowed said conent to be utilised on their product.
Awesome marketing campaigns nonetheless, the fact however remains that Apple didnt create the mp3 market, all they did was make it accessable to uneducated consumers who didnt know any better.
I still have my old panasonic player which ran only on 1aaa and 1 sd card.. Back then, it was retailing for $700 (i didnt pay for it though.. lol) but it was smal enough to fit around ur neck.. bout half teh size od a minidv tape.. and this was way WAY before the ipod was even a glimmer of thought...
players and teh content itself was always there... all apple did was saturate the market with their campaigns and it worked..
Good luck to them..
It still doesnt mean their product is the best out there.. im yet to find one that is..
numbers vs quality are very different things, and just because u sell a large number of items, doesnt necessarily mean that those items are better than another.
One other thing abotu apple, is that in larger retil stores (here in aus its harvey norman and domain - sister companies and owned byt eh same group.. but now were seeing Myer and otehr large retailers falling victim to Apple simply becuase they want teh ipod product.. even though) Apple Macs were nowhere to be seen, but since the ipod, the mac has found a new footing. This is partly becuase of the "shelf space" agreement apple pressure retailers with....
In other words
"we will give u Ipod display cases, bays and all the marketing material you need.. BUT you must also carry at least One Mac laptop and one Mac desktop on the premises.
Every 6 months, there MUST be evidence of an advertising campaign to push these products. In addition, you have a monthly sales quote of XYZ numbers of Ipods, G5's, accessories etc etc
THIS is how it is here in aus.. .
So even if they DONT want the other apple products, theyre forced to demo and supply them alongside the ipods..
Either way, windows systems are still outselling macs by at least 35:1... reason being is that those supplying the hardware, DONT suply the software.. coz it jst doesnt sell.
Now in HN and Domain, tehyre on NDA's about these kind of deals, but for these stores to stock the ipods (which sell like hotcakes) theyre forced to carry other Apple items..
And this is how apple have refound their footing in the market..
In addition, their heavily discounted rates for educational instituations are what have let them overtake the WindowwsXP market (in schools), in turn this doesnt bode well for the industry as these students are only exposed to apple OS environments and NLE's, as opposed to a Windowws environment, which is MUCH more flexible with regard choice ( ie video production tools)
