OT: Blackmagic Video Assist Compatibility

Red Prince wrote on 9/11/2017, 3:02 PM

Hello,

I am thinking about buying the Blackmagic Design Video Assist 4K 7" HDMI/6G-SDI Recording Monitor. I am wondering if the files it produces can be edited in Vegas Pro 14/15. And I mean without having to first convert them to some other format. Does anyone know?

Does nobody know? According to the above link, the device supports Apple ProRes 422 HQ, 422, LT, Proxy Avid DNxHD 220x, DNxHD 145, DNxHD 45, DNxHD 220x MXF, DNxHD 145 MXF, DNxHD 45 MXF, DNxHR HQX MXF, DNxHR HQX, DNxHR SQ, DNxHR LB, DNxHR SQ MXF, DNxHR LB MXF. Alas, that means nothing to me. I normally work with mpg, mp4, and png imput. And I cannot find the information of what files Vegas can import anywhere. Yes, even after all these years of using Vegas, I have no idea what it can import other than the three formats I have been using. And I don’t feel like spending $850 just hoping it will work for me.

Without first hand experience with the device in question... many, if not all of those formats you mention are supported by Vegas. Of course, I suppose BlackMagic could muck them up, but my guess is that at least some of those formats would work. You would need to install the Avid codecs and possibly Quicktime to get the desired codecs installed on your machine.

Thanks, ddm!

Maybe download the free version of Davinci Resolve 14, if you do not want to purchase full version. Resolve will definitely work with BlackMagic Design products. Davinci Resolve is a superb NLE.

Thank you, I have the free version of Resolve 14, and I prefer working in Vegas. Anyway, I am going to order the device tomorrow. I was going to order it today after reading what ddm said, but our local Internet connection disappeared until the evening, and so I shall wait till tomorrow. I prefer to make such purchases over the phone and I needed the Internet to get the B&H phone number.

I have an Atomos recorder and I have be unable to get Vegas to read any of the Avid codecs recorded in 4k. I have not tried ProRes as I am still on Vegas 13. Note: Have the Avid codec installed and they work in Resolve but not in Vegas.

What Atomos model you have? And do you able to share a short sample (just 5 or 10 sec is enough) here? I can try it on VP15, and if not yet supported, I will forward to developers.

(I still use Atomos Ninja 2 and prefer to use ProRes instead of Avid DNxHD)

@ Red Prince

I am using the BM Video Assist 4K since long times. All it´s files work perfect on Vegas-timeline.

No problems at all. Just be sure to have their latest firmware - check BM site more often...

Thanks! I ordered it yesterday, so reading this is very good news. 😃
