OT: Blink3times - HDDVD

Hey Blink,

I took the plunge and got VS 11 to author and burn my HDDVD's. As you said the program does consume a vegas m2v and wave file without recompressing and the output is so crisp. However, there appears to be a slight stutter when playing back the disk in my A2. It's very subtle, in fact the wife didn't really see it without me pointing it out. Stutter is not a perfect description of what I'm seeing but it's the closest word I can think of to describe it. Almost like the player is struggling to keep up or its right on the edge of its ability to keep up. I'm wondering if you ever saw anything like this as I know you have burned a lot of disc this way. I'm wonder if different media might help since the bit rate is much higher 25k constant. I'm just using some office depot 4X disc. They worked find for my SD stuff, but maybe I'm asking to much. My experience with Ulead products produced smooth playing disk, but always re-encoded. Thanks in advance.

Try to lower the bitrate and see if that helps. Should not be an issue, but remember, the DVD was never created for these high bitrates, so there may be reading issues etc.

What brand of DVD+-Rs are you using? Verbatim gives me good results, but not every make of media does.

Agreed.
Stutter is usually due to the disk you are using. When I first started this stuff, I must have tried every disk under the sun and still I got a stutter. I was beginning to blame the format itself.... until I tried verbatims. I have now done about 150 of them with verbatims and haven't had a stutter yet. (I use verbatim DL inkjet printables)

Also getting perfect playback with printable T+Y DVD+Rs. Had problems with an HP burner, but my new Sony burner is perfect. So burner is also a potential problem.

By the way, ULEAD MF6+ will not recode MainConcept M2Vs or MPG program streams multiplexed with Womble from M2Vs.

The reason brand matters is that some brands are harder to read for a DVD player than others. This means that the player is not able to read enough data off the disk fast enough to keep up with the encoded bit rate. If you have bad media it is therefore often possible to make non-stutter video at lower bit rates.

Getting TY or Verbatim media is the better solution though.

Also, at 25mbps, 3x DVDs (HD DVD on DVD+-R) are pushing the transfer rate really close to the limit. You need to use really good quality media to get away with this. I'm sure you could also lower the bitrate and get away with cheaper discs, but the good ones are only 30 cents or so each if you shop around online.

Not brand - media ID code. Don't forget, we live in a world of outsourcing. Verbatim has no less than six different outsourcing companies they put their label on. The others are the same.

By the way, ULEAD MF6+ will not recode MainConcept M2Vs or MPG program streams multiplexed with Womble from M2Vs.MF6 will not recode your exported .m2t files from Vegas. Just when using MF6+ make your project settings equal the source material & on the audio side select Dolby 2/0 or 5.1. In MF6+ during the multi-plexing stage only the audio will be converted from mpeg audio to either lpcm/dolby, this depends on your project settings (located under the GEAR Icon).

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge, but what is VS 11 ? I have a Ulead 11 tryout I am hoping will burn HD dvds for me. Also I have the A2 HDDVD player and now hope to edit, render, burn to -R or +R dvd's. I do not know what to do next. I shoot HDV with a Sony. thanks for your help. Roger

An update to Video Studio 11 & 11 Plus will be released tomorrow that will give it the capabilities of burning most formats and some fixes that made it a very crook bit of software to use.

There is not only Video studio 11 that will do HD DVD, but also Ulead Movie Factory 6 and Pinnacle Studio 11. FCP I believe will also now do HD DVD.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Right now I'm just using cheap Office Depot 4X disk. They worked just fine for SD stuff but I guess they won't cut it for such high bit rates. BTW, I tried trials of both Ulead products and I never could get it to make a disk without converting it. Maybe it needed a patch that the trial didn't have or just didn't understand it well enough. So it's off to the store for some verbatim dvd's. Thanks again.
