OT - Blue Ray Player

I've decided that I'm spending too much money each month on my HD pay for view so I think I'll sign up for Blockbuster's monthly program and rent blueray discs. I need a player though.

I'm not really a console gamer but I do see some value in having the gaming system (2 college age kids). So is the Playstation3 an economical player? What is a good recommendation on a stand alone BR player these days? Now that BR is king, should I wait for some new pricing?

Thanks.

At this stage of the game... the PS3 is your best bet (geez... I never thought I would be saying this)

I was DEAD SET AGAINST the PS3 as a player and it took every ounce of strength I had to drag myself into Betbuy, pick up one of those disgusting things and march it to the checkout....no sh*t!

Today, a month later, I have absolutely no regrets. It's been great as a player and it certainly beats out any of the stand-alones they have on the shelf right now. It can stream, it can store, it can play multiple formats, it can shift from bitstream to pcm on the fly....etc...etc

Just went to a 46" LCD plus a PS3 via HDMI (allegedly for my young daughter). Went out and picked up blu-ray Casino Royal and The Fifth Element - way, way beyond my expectations. Flawless performance and dazzling images. And it's a great player for the Sponge Bob games.

That is what average consumers are waiting for.

The PS3 is rapidly becoming the young son's model railroad of the 21st century...

But why go with the very low customer satisfaction Blockheadbuster Online?

Netflix is provably better in customer satisfaction, number of movie titles, and in their unbeaten system for recommendation of new movies you might like.

Cool. I can't wait to see the Model Railroad/Playstation 3 clubs spring up around the USA. Think of it. You will be able to buy collectible parts for antique trains and antique Playstation 3's. Think of the hats with this on the front and this on the back. And someday many years from now they can pass the time like this only with a PS3 layout table. Makes me want to beat my Wii.

Why the Blockbuster.com route? Mainly because you can return a movie to a brick and morter store and exchange it for another. Have not looked at Netflix... I will do that as well, thanks for the feed back everyone.

Last I heard, industry people were saying that we wouldn't see price drops below the $200 range until maybe end of year 2009.

...and of course industry people have no self-interest here...

Don't worry, there will be $200 BR players long before end of '09..
