OT - bmp thumbnails

Hello All,

I read a tip that allows you to mess around with Win98SE (or other Windows, I presume) so that the icon for .BMP files was actually a thumbnail of the content - a very useful tip. Now my system has changed and I have lost the thumbnail icons and have IrfanView icons instead

I want to get the thumbnails back, back forget how and, of course, I didn't write the tip down or remember where I got it!

Anyone know how to do this?

Also, can it be done to get a thumbnail icon for .JPG, .GIF, or any other graphics files?

Regards,
Neil Porter

Try this tip at your own risk if you feel comfortable editing the registry:

Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Paint.Picture/DefaultIcon location in the registry. Change the value for DefaultIcon to %1,
This will force Windows 98 to use the file as its icon
Keep in mind that this may degrade performance on slow systems because it will increase RAM usage if you have a lot of bitmaps.
