OT: BSOD after MS update

(Win 7 Pro x64). I have carelessly been letting my system do auto updates from MS. Last Tuesday they downloaded KB2982791 and I installed it, turned off the machine.

Went to boot, and got the BSOD error x00050.

Digging around on the net, I found a workaround - use a rescue disk (I used Acronis) to get into the machine (had to tell it to look for a backup file, and then to look at all file types), and delete this file: \windows\system32\FNTCACHE.DAT

Reboot, all is well. (note on my system FNTCACHE.DAT was all in caps when I found it).

Then go to win update and uninstall this patch KB2982791. Make sure you don't reinstall it in the future, although MS has removed it from their download page.

Some sites are speculating it is a conflict with Kasperksy AV, which I (sadly) have on my machine. It was installed by Best Buy Geek Squad when they reloaded my machine.

I've found the odd MS update cane break some machines and not others. There was one MS update for XP that would always kill my system, even on a fresh install (I've found most issues with MS updates are software conflicts and a clean install lets the update run w/o issues). I don't know if it's possible in Vista/7/8.x, but in 2k/XP you could boot to the console and use manually remove updates. That's how I found it was a specific update.
