OT: buy Sony F1 now ?

I just can't wait to own a F1but what problems/issues will I face since Vegas is currently not quite capable (correct me if I am wrong) of editing the footage ? Should I wait till Vegas is updated for HDV ?

One more question. If viewed on a normal TV, does the final output from F1 show a significant improvement on quality ?

Thanks.

Vegas right now can edit raw HDV. Working with raw HDV on the timeline is very slow and previews are only a few frames a second. This is the case with most NLEs because decoding HDV is hard on a processor.

So solution is capture the HDV to an intermediary codec. The solution for Vegas is Cineform's Connect HD. You can but it from this website for $150 by clicking products above. The new version of Connect HD support's printing HDV back to tape for the FX1 (I'm not sure about the Z1). The 5.0d release of Vegas has HDV templates built in.

You currently cannot deliver HDV to a regular TV that I know of. If you shoot HDV you can use Vegas to downconvert to DV which will give you better looking DV, but it's not at the level of HD.

You CAN deliver HDV to a HD TV using tape. No DVD's yet! Also of course you can print back to camera and play from there, but I have not yet been able to get anything even OUT of my camera!

I am wary of using a third party software for HDV output. Hopefully, Sony will update Vegas soon to meet future challenges of HDV.

Until then, the purchase of FX1 can wait. Thanks guys for your input.

I plan to wait to see how the format wars play out. I think HDV is a retrograde step as far as audio is concerned, so I'm interested to see what Panasonic's new offering is going to be like.

Does one get HD previews out of the IEEE port, thru the camera, then to a HDTV set?
