For those of us that dont have the extra cash toshell out for a professional monitor, is there any way to calibrate a regular TV so that you can monitor whille you edit? Likea rough estimate of how much contrast, tint, etc????
You need a primary blue gel (to replace the "blue gun" on pro monitors), you put color bars on screen then follow some procedures described here .
It probably won't be as easy with a tv set than with a pro monitor but you can get some decent results by following the steps.
Thanks to DVD's you may already have a way. many recent DVD's have a "THX Optimizer" on it. It usually says this on the sleeve - so if you you have a DVD with this on it you are a step ahead of the game. Now the new DVD of The Incredibles has a newly revamped version on it and you can get info on how to use it over at .
Another method is to follow the tut here: .
EDIT - And if you want to get a "free" pair of "glasses" for the process go here: Optimizer Glasses
Try my "setup" tutorials. Accessible by clicking on my name and following the link. Do you absolutely have to have a "professional" grade monitor? Heck no. Is it a good idea if you can afford it? Depends what you do. As always, different strokes for different folks. Does having a "pro" monitor make you a better videographer? No, of course not, no more than some guy in a big white hat automatically makes him a "better" cook then your mama. Not my mama anyway, she was an exceptionally good cook. Never had a day of "professional" training, never used any fancy gizmos either.
BillyBoy this is what I've figured all along. So why continue to contend with those who are professionals making a living in this industry. I would expect professionals to offer professional advice and recomment professional products. These are the products they deal day to day with. Does it always help the consumer or home video enthusiast. No. But I think most of us are smart enough to figure that out without you or Red attacking. When someone comes to me and asks what a good home video camera is, I don't know what to tell them because I don't use those types of cameras. Doesn't mean I sit there and badger them for not using professional equipment and neither do those who offer advice based on their technical knowledge.
This constant attacking has to stop. There are uses for 'professional' gear. That's why its being sold. It's not just to psych people into thinking they need it. There are Vegas users that deal with an industry that requires certain quality of gear and there are some who don't. Your opinion is important but don't just assume that because you don't need the gear others don't.
Time to stop the bickering. Take a breath and chill for a bit. Or just not reply to the people that get your goat.
Silly Cheno, I was referring to my mother's cooking.Scroll back up and actually read what I said. May I also suggest you take a course in reading comprehension before you end up with your foot in your mouth... again. Its getting to be a habit for you. Further, you don't know what gear I use or what kind of work I do, because I never said. That's strike two.
