OT: Calling all Aussies!

Hi guys

I'm wondering if anybody from Australia has ordered anything from overseas before? I'm about to buy a few things from B&H Photo & Video in New York as it's seems cheaper to buy video gear from there. I'm ordering a Audio Technica AT822 stereo mic from B&H as I can get for half the cost than I can here in Aus!!!
As I've never ordered stuff from the US, I'm wondering if there's some sort of import tax or something of the like that could ruin the cost saving???

Thanks heaps
Tim

You will pay import duty for anything over AUD$250

There is mostly NO import duty on anything anymore coming into Australia. What you will have to pay (depending on landed value) is brokerage and GST. The GST is applied on both the cost of the item and the freight.

I've imported quite a bit from the US although not from B&H. It can pay to ring a few people here and see if they'll come close to the price you're going to pay importing it yourself.

Speaking of mics, have you looked at the Rode mics, bought one last week, very nice, good price and made here. Oh, hmm, better check as there ar emics made in Oz maybe, just maybe they have tariff protection, better ring customs first eh. Could be as high as 150%.
