While I love my AVCHD format Sony CX7 you are likely to get recommendations for the various HDV format cameras. I think that means you will be stuck with tape - but there may be some tape-less options.

Sony HVR-V1U. Great results. Tape based HDV but you can outfit w/ the HVR-DR60 mountable hard drive.

If you are looking to save some money I have the FX1 HDV camera and was just about to upgrade to the 7K EX1. I have the Sony filter kit and the Sony wide angle lens, the big extra battery and 4 HD tapes . My cost from B&H was $4074.75. The camera has no more than about 15 hours on it and I would let the whole kit go for 2K
