OT - Camera for shooting sports

My young nephew is turning into quite a football player and his dad is interested in getting a new camera to shoot his games. He is using an older Sony (8mm) now. The games are played in the afternoon, and he makes DVDs for the coaches and players. Any suggestions as to what may be a decent camera in the ~$700-$800 range? I don't think that he does much editing, and if he did it would probably be with Movie Maker or something similar. (I would do it, but they live over an hr away.) Decent low-light capability would be good too.

Regards,
Jerry

"... he makes DVDs for the coaches and players."Does he take overviews of the entire field or action shots of individual players from the sideline?

I started my video "career" making season highlights of my son's soccer teams, and have hundreds of hours of 8mm & Hi-8 tapes of his teams. I found it absolutely critical to use a camera with a viewfinder (rather than solely an LCD screen) to catch closeups of individual plays/players from the sideline. It's hard to find consumer grade cameras with viewfinders these days.

Others my be able to perfect a technique to catch action shots with the LCD screen, I could not (and hold the camera still). In any case, this is something I would consider in your camera evaluation.
